How to be accurate with vintage outfits?

       Vintage outfits are really hard to get as they were wore at that time, because many of us haven't lived that era. We search pictures on the internet to get the perfect look of the decade we like. What we find are many old photos, magazine drawings and costumes that represent that era.  Most of them are there for sale in a online catalog; the goal is to represent the decade/era with that costume to make it easier to guess, -like the first picture-.     For people like me that are looking for accurate outfits, it seems strange to understand the goal to dress like that, because we know very inside, that those garments weren't used at that time. It's obviously that those are costumes and are inspired in real looks. But how far we can trust them?     We have some issues looking for real outfits of the decade we are searching: It's hard to find photos of real outfits of some decades, because photography was exclusive.
